The Maybank Foundation – Perdana Leadership Foundation Writing and Photo Contest 2015 themed “Empowering Youth for a Better ASEAN” ended at the end of September with more than 3,900 written submissions and more than 3,000 photos from young Malaysians from all over the world.

The fiction and essay category had entries that ranged from science fiction to serious contemplations of current issues, while Instagram photos with the contest hashtag #AYAcontest2015 (ASEAN Youth in Action!) depicted youth in various activities, from sports to dance to community work. The contest judges – who include bestselling novelist Tunku Halim, literature professor Dato’ Ghulam Sarwar Yousof, photographer-lecturer Che Ahmad Azhar and TV-anchor and columnist Ben Ibrahim, now face the tough task of determining the contest winners.

Tan Sri Nik Mohamed Nik Yaacob, Executive Director, Perdana Leadership Foundation, said, “We are delighted by the response to the contest as we see a big increase in participation, especially from the secondary schools. We thank all entrants for their submissions and thank also the parents, teachers and lecturers who encouraged their students to take part. Perdana Leadership Foundation believes that original thought and their articulation are essential to good leadership and this contest, we believe, emphasizes those qualities.”

With more than RM200, 000 in cash prizes alone and up to fifty prizes per category, the contest offers many young Malaysians between the age of 13 and 21 the chance to be rewarded for their essay, fiction and photo-essay. This is the second Perdana Leadership Foundation and Maybank Foundation collaboration and the first time that the organisers are inviting fiction and photo submissions, making it one of the first nationwide contests for young fiction writers.

The number of fiction and photo entries tells us that many young Malaysians are very creative but need encouragement, incentive and a communications channel. We are privileged that our contest is one of those channels and we hope that this programme has lit the creative spark within all contestants. Maybank Foundation is a strong supporter of pursuits that encourage creativity and empowerment such as this contest. We believe that this essay & photo contest will inspire deeper thought and analysis on the future of the country, by the very people who will inherit this nation. We look forward to meeting with the top winners soon!” said Encik Shahril Anuar Jimin, the CEO of Maybank Foundation.

The contest ran from May to September 2015. In August, workshops on writing and photo-journalism were held in Kuantan, Penang, Kuching and Batu Pahat, which taught the rudiments of writing and photography to more than 200 students.

The results of the contest will be announced in November and a prize giving ceremony will be held in January 2016 to fete the contest winners. For more information, log on to http://www.MaybankPerdanaContest.com.

Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad Launches the Maybank Foundation – Perdana Leadership Foundation Writing and Photo Contest 2015

“We are in danger of losing the art of writing,” said Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, the fourth Prime Minister of Malaysia and the Honorary President of Perdana Leadership Foundation in a speech delivered at the Official Launch of the Maybank Foundation – Perdana Leadership Foundation Writing and Photo Contest 2015 at the Perdana Leadership Foundation today. “Young people today use abbreviations when sending text, to the extent that words are written according to sound and not meaning. For example, “4” instead of “For”, “M” instead of “Am”, “U” instead of “You”. I fear that we may lose the ability to write and spell properly soon,” Tun elaborated.

“That is why this contest is timely as it will encourage young people to articulate their thoughts in proper sentences and even to tell a story through photographs. I congratulate the organisers for creating the contest and urge all young people to participate,” Tun said in launching the Writing and Photo Contest. More than 250 students from schools and universities attended the launch.

This is the second time that Perdana Leadership Foundation is teaming up with Maybank Foundation to organise a youth competition and this time, more categories are open to contestants. Young Malaysians aged between 13 and 21 years old can write essays, compose stories or snap a series of photos to participate in the contest. Wonderful prizes await, including up to US$2,500 in cash, Macbooks and iPads. MPH Bookstores is also contributing E-Book Readers as well as book vouchers to the lucky winners. The icing on the cake is the chance to rub shoulders with established authors and photo-journalists at the prize-giving ceremony slated to be later this year.

The contest runs until 16th September 2015. Schools, colleges and universities stand to win prizes, too, if their student wins the first prize or if they send in the highest number of entries. Additionally, prizes await institutions that send in 25 entries and more. More details are available at the contest’s website www.MaybankPerdanaContest.com.
